Word 2010 Space Between footnote separator and note
Hello,
I am trying to REDUCE the space between the footnote separator and footnote in Word 2010. I've tried line and paragraph spacing for the note, but it seems to have no effect. Please help! |

Switch to Draft view, then click on any footnote for editing. When you do this, a small toolbar will appear above the footnote. This give access to the footnote separator, amongst other things. You can change the formatting there.

The Footnotes become visible (so that you can click on them) when you click on "Show Notes" in the "Footnotes" section of the "References" ribbon.

That's all very well, but it doesn't give you access to the footnote separator, which is what is required here.

If they are not visible, you can make them visible by clicking on "Show notes" in the "References" ribbon. Then you can go ahead and click on it to reveal options box to edit the Footnote separater. Cheers Last edited by Ross Marsden; 01-30-2013 at 11:16 AM. Reason: correction |

As I also said, you have to use DRAFT view. All the playing around with in world 'Show Notes' is useless without it.

You can't do any playing around with 'Show Footnotes' in anything OTHER than Draft view, because the 'Show Footnotes' icon is DISABLED in all the other views (Print Layout, Web Layout and Outline).
You gave to be in DRAFT view for 'Show Footnotes' to be enabled. That's a given. Cheers |

Wrong again. 'Show Notes' works fine in Print Layout view, for example. In the other views, Word switches to 'Draft' view if you click on 'Show Notes'.

Alright; conceeded. But not "again" as I was not wrong before.
My oringinal point was this: If Footnotes are not on the screen in DRAFT view, they will show when you click on Show Notes in the References ribbon. Then you can access the Footnote Separator. If Footnotes are not shown, you can't. Obviously. I hope this is clear now. It is a small but important point of clarification. Cheers |

Your solution worked for me. Thanks so much for posting it because I had just about given up after Googling this several times (and swearing a LOT). I have a related problem. Sometimes when I select "draft" view, the writing is so tiny I can't read it and the document will line up across the left 1" of the page. Any ideas?

In the View ribbon there is a Zoom control. It may be at 10% or something. Hit 100% and go from there.
