Question troubleshoot hyperlinks

Hi
I have several word 2007 documents containing numerous hyperlinks to web pages.
In the past all I had to do was use CTRL and click to follow a hyperlink, now all of sudden this doesn't work.
I get the message
Unable to open http://??????? Cannot locate the internet server or proxy server.

I have tried deselecting use CTRL + click to follow hyperlink in the advanced section of Word Options, but it hasn't helped.
As an experiment I entered a new hyperlink, by copying and pasting direct from the address bar on a web page, but even that gives me the cannot locate internet or proxy server.
I am connected to the internet using moxilla firefox 3.6.16. which is working perfectly well.
What am I doing wrong?
Hope someone can advise.
Joysie
