Where in Vista does Word save 'Normal' file?
(I hope my question makes sense...) Where does Word 2007 save the file that contains any changes I have made to my working environment (e.g. new Quick Access Templates), which gets saved when I quit Word? I want to make a safety copy of it in the event I lose my settings...

Hi willmow,
Look under Word Options|Advanced > File Locations > User templates.

Thanks. I'm trying to understand the behaviour of the Normal.dotm template. I have just added some QATs to a doc, then quit Word 2007 (which should update the Normal template) - but when I check the template's 'last modified' details, it doesn't give today's date. The same occurs if I specifically open the Normal template, make changes and save it - no change of date / no sign that the changes have registered. Anything I'm doing wrong? Thanks

Hi willmow,
Changes to the QAT don't affect Normal.dot. The basic QAT contents for each user are stored in a file named Word.QAT. However, you can also store Template/Document specific QAT content within the document/template. To do this, open the document/template concened, then go to the QAT Customization (Alt, F, I, C) and, above the right hand column, you can choose the name of the file you want your QAT Customization in and then add any of the 216 custom buttons to it. If you save a template to the trusted/global template location, when you restart Word and attach that template (Alt, T, I), your QAT items should appear on the right hand end of the QAT.

Thanks - I'm looking to somehow make a safety of that Word.qat file as my system seems to frequently forget the QATs I add and it's really boring having to keep inserting them again. Would that be possible? I found the (hidden) file deep in the bowels of Windows...

Hi willmow,
Just make a copy of the file and store it and another file with the path to where it goes in a safe place ...

Your answer was a little obscure What I did was locate the hidden word.qat file, opened the location and made a copy, leaving it there. Sure enough, when I quit Word next time, it forgot my added QATs. I therefore deleted the word.qat file, renamed the copy to word.qat - and Word opened with my stored QATs. Joy!
The next question is, why is Word 2007 forgetting my QATs? They are all related to a particular program. I ran the program through a repair routine, but it's made no difference. |

Hi willmow,
Are you on a network and use a roaming profile? If so, see: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/958062

No, it's just little old me, unnetworked. I can tell when Word is going to forget my QATs on quitting, because just before the window disappears I see the tabs strip away...

Hi willmow,
Applying the fix at the site referred to in my last post probably wouldn't do any harm - it might even resolve the problem if it's in any way related to your Windows setup. Also, do you have any non-standard Word addins running that might be interfering with the QAT retention?
