Default How to get to normal.dotm

I was trying to make some edits to normal.dotm in word 2007 / windows 7.

I followed all the directions of clicking on the office icon and then templates - the problem is that normal.dotm is already open and when I look at the contents it appears that it is empty.

What am I doing wrong?

Where is this file stored I tried searching for it to no avail.

Thanks

Bob

Hi Bob, the normal template is usually empty (it holds all of your default formatting) - you can make any adjustments with the formatting - change the default fault (I always have liked Ariel), margins (I don't know why they set the default margins to 1.25), and the spacing between paragraphs. Open your normal.dot - make any formatting changes you need, then close it. Exit out of Word and when you come back in any formatting changes you made should hold for any new document you create.

Hope this helps!

Hi Bob,

The 'Normal.dot(m)' file should be empty unless you want Word to start every new document with some standard contents. Generally not recommended. However, you might want to modify some of the defaults Word works with, such as fonts, paragraph spacing, and so on. If you modify the Styles that are set in the 'Normal.dot(m)' file for these, then any new document you create from that template will default to those settings.

Thanks -- I'm making progress - but small steps

I was trying to add the full path of the document. In another post it suggested that I add the following code to the normal template:

Sub AutoOpen()
'Displays the Document Path in the Title Bar
ActiveWindow.Caption = ActiveDocument.FullName
End Sub

I open the normal.dotm (don't know why it is .dotm and not .dot) to a blank document and saved it. - exited word. When I restart word the normal.dotm is presented which has the the added code.

I was assuming that the code is vbscript and I would have to declare something in normal.dotm that it is code.

Am I missing the obvious?

Also where is this file stored?

Hi Bob,

Word's templates in Word 2007 & later come in two flavours - .dotx and .dotm
• .dotx signifies that the template is not macro-enabled.
• .dotm signifies that the template is macro-enabled.

To use the macro, you don't put it in the body of the document - you put it into a code module. For instructions, see: http://www.gmayor.com/installing_macro.htm
