Default Border issue

Someone else sent me a Word doc that has multiple lines in it that when you scroll over it says it's a border.. however when I go to the border panel, it says NONE so it isn't recognizing it. Does it need to be removed by the originator? or is it a glitch... it is the 3 point dotted line that seems to be consistently used, however in at least 1 instance it it between text and a page break, in another it is between 2 paragraphs, and in the 3rd scenario it is at the end of text before an auto page break. In all cases it widens the space after the text or between the text. It is 3 or 4 line spaces wide. I have taken "snap shots" if anyone wants to take a look at what I am talking about. just need to be able to send them... (jpgs)
Any ideas how to get rid of them?

Hi howaito,

If these are paragraph-level borders, you'll find it easier to turn them off if you select the whole paragraph they're applied to and choose 'none' for the paragraph border.

Thank you for your reply.. but that didn't seem to help, at least under the border box... I had never heard of a paragraph border before... interesting. Is that taken care of in the regular border box, or somewhere else...?

OK, you'll need to provide more info about this border. Without seeing the document, it's hard to know what the issue might be.

As for paragraph borders, yes, they're managed via the same Borders & Shading tool.

Hi howaito,

Your images confirm these are paragraph-level borders. All you need to do is click on the 'borders' button on the paragraph tab and choose 'none'.

Default Border Problems

I am in Office 7, so I finally found a "paragraph" option under the Border tab, rather than the page tab. However what is happening now is the paragraph border is moving up between the selected paragraph and the one above it, when I select none. In addition it is adding a vertical line artifact when it moves up creating a new problem...
because there was a DRAFT watermark on the copy in Print Layout, I tried going to draft view to see if it made a difference... it doesn't. The originator of the document has also created a page element ( seen in one of the previous jpgs I sent) that is through out a many page document... I am wondering if there is something like a master page
in Indesign or some other kind of semi- locked page this could be occuring on. the page element is semi transparent however, and this break isn't.
I am able to change words, provide review text on the document, so it doesn't seem to be code locked. Any more ideas?
Thank you for getting back to me on this....

Hi howaito,

The 'moving border, simply means the previous paragraph had the same attribute applied - a bottom border for the last paragraph in a sequence. You'll have to delete the border from all the affected paragraphs that you don't want it to apply to.

The vertical bar, looks like a 'track changes' bar. This means the document has 'track changes' activated.

The 'page element' is simply a page footer - a standard Word feature.

Default Border Problems - solved!

I had previously tried removing them from the whole document using the paragraph format, but to no avail... I tried paragraph above and below, 2paras above and below, and it just kept moving up. but what I just tried was just 1 chapter... they finally disappeared..!!!!!!!

I saw what you mean about the left page vertical line and that I just need to turn off track changes to make it go away.... so thank you so much for your help!
