1.How can you save the modified properties of headings since they revert to default on each new document?

2.Headings sometimes register as headings and sometimes they don't, so when you are scrolling down the document it doesn't say on which part you are, just the part of the last registered heading...

There is no discernible difference between registered headings and headings that just look like headings. I did the exactly same thing in both cases. Why does this keep happening?

It's time for you to learn about Styles in Word and how to use them. Yes, you can format some text to look like it's been formatted in a heading Style, but that doesn't make it so. Conversely, you can reformat some text in a paragraph to which a heading Style has been applied so that it looks like it isn't in that Style. Neither should occur.

To make life easier, you can add a 'Style' box to the QAT. This shows the Style of the current selection and allows you to choose a different one just by typing the first few characters of its name.

Of course, I didn't mean if the style of heading looks like heading then it has the function of a heading. I meant that when you specifically select text to become heading(of one of defaults offered) it doesn't always become a heading.

I have never experienced that; neither have I seen other reports of it happening. For that to happen, there would have to be some corruption of some part of your Word installation. Have you tried repairing Word, replacing its Normal template or Building Blocks file?.

Of course, the options you have active via Styles|Options (eg "Select Styles to Show" & "Show next heading when previous level is used") might also have some bearing on what you're seeing.

I figured out a 100% consistent tell when this will happen, if you highlight a word that you want to be a heading if there is an extra highlighted space on the right side of it it will have the function of a heading, if that space is missing when it is highlighted it will just have the style of a heading, not the function.

Anyway, I did "fix" this by way of completely deleting the lines, the ones that contain the word and below, then clicking enter to get space at the beginning of the page, and then retyping the word.

There sure is a lot of tiny details that go wrong when you are editing text in ms office...

I am unable to replicate that behaviour using Word's built-in Heading Styles (which are paragraph Styles). I can imagine something like that happening if you're using a custom character Style and the "extra highlighted space on the right side" is, in fact, a paragraph mark, but not otherwise. You can toggle the paragraph mark display on/off by clicking on the ¶ symbol on the Ribbon's Home tab.
