Default Table of Contents width

I have an automatic TOC. The TOC width seems to be the same as the default margins for the document: 1/2" each side. I would like to reduce the width of the TOC. The TOC seems in some ways to be like most objects that can be selected and resized, but the resizing handles do not appear. Is there a way to shrink the TOC width?

Thanks,
Jonart

Hi Jonart,

You should be able to do that by either:
1. Inserting Section breaks either side of the TOC and giving the Section containing the TOC wider margins than the rest of the document; or
2. Formatting the TOC paragraphs with some left & right indenting.

The reason you can't select the TOC as an object is that it isn't one - it's a field. You can see this by selecting the TOC and pressing Shift-F9 to expose the field code.

Thanks Paul,
I don't know how to do either of those solutions.
I think I'll start with the second one. Seems more straightforward somehow.
