Red face MS Word - There was an error opening the file

I tried open this doc on Win XP winword 2003 SP3. The document can be open.

However when i tried to open in window 7 64 bit , winword 2003 sp3, i am having issues to open with this error "there was an error opening the file".

Do note that that i have the microsoft office compatibility pack installed.

Hi cookiegal,

Have you tried repairing Word (Help|Detect & Repair)?

Hi cookiegal,

Do you have the problems with all documents (both .doc and .docx format), or just one document? If the latter, which format?

a few of the documents have this issue.
I can convert other docx to be compatiable with MS 2003 without issues.
Just that this thing amazed me as it can be open in WINXP MS WORD 2003 and not WIN7 MS WORD 2003

Hi cookiegal,

It may be a compatability issue between Word 2003 and the 64-bit version of Windows 7. AFAIK there are no issues with the 32-bit version of Windows 7.

Hi cookiegal,

I run both Office 2000 and Office 2007 on a 32-bit Win 7 PC (and did so on a Vista PC before that), with no issues. Since you're having problems with both the 64-bit and virtual 32-bit environments, that suggests an issue with your Win 7 installation, rather than with Office, per se, or, if the virtualisation uses components from the 64-bit installation, the same Office issue is affecting both.

Since a repair didn't help, try the approaches suggested here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/921541
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/...artingWord.htm and
http://lounge.windowssecrets.com/ind...owtopic=197827
for various series of troubleshooting steps that will help you track down (and hopefully solve) the problem.
