Default Problem with document map--cannot make selection

Have a Word 2003 document under XP that has been just fine for years.* I wanted to update some table data which I did by deleting the old tables and pasting in the new tables.* One of the tables was quite long (300+ pages) but only about 2" wide, so I figured I'd put the table into its own section and format the section as 4 columns... cut that down to 75 pages.* Well, when I did that, the table title (which is at outline level 2) becomes unselectable in the document map.* It still shows there... but I just can't click on it.* When I try to click on it in the document map, it instead selects the item below it (also a level 2 item).* I did some experimentation and I can find no rhyme or reason for this behavior.* I deleted all the tables and started re-adding them one by one and around the 4th table, the problem occurs again.* I'm doing the same steps, but the document map gets bugged.* What is also strange, is that if I delete the effected table, the bug moves up to the prior table...which had been ok prior to that.* I have to delete the whole section and start again.

Anybody have any idea what this is, or how to fix it?

*
Thanks in advance,
Darren

Well, I figured out a work around. The problem never seems to occur as long as I have a paragraph mark before the continuous break. I had put the section breaks on the same line as the table titles, like this:

Table #1:::::::::::::::Section Break (Continuous):::::::::::::::¶

If I just put a paragraph mark prior to the break it seems to avoid the problem. So it ends up looking like this:

Table #1¶:::::::::::::::Section Break (Continuous):::::::::::::::¶

Not sure why that would make a difference, but at least I'm making progress now.
