Default TOC Formatting Issue

I have a typical TOC that references the heading styles in a document, with styles defined for each TOC level (TOC 1, TOC 2, etc.). The headings are numbered, so they are linked, in turn, to a multilevel list.

The heading styles in the body of the document are bold, and alternating heading levels are bold/italic. Obviously I want the format of the associated heading *numbers* to match the format of each heading level in the body.

However, the TOC styles are NOT bold; they don't match the heading styles at all (although they do mirror the italic in alternating heading levels).

The problem is that the heading numbers in the body of the document *don't* consistently match the styles of the heading level they're linked to. So my Heading 2, for instance, is 14pt bold italic, but the number associated with it defaults to 14pt italic -- it doesn't seem to pick up the bold, even though it's linked to the Heading 2 style.

So I set the number style format for level 2 to bold/italic in the Multilevel list dialog. This fixed the number style in the body of the document...but then the section numbers in the *TOC items* for that level switch to bold automatically as well, which is most definitely not what I want.

Is there some setting or sequence that I'm missing? Thanks!
Caroline
