Default Advance to Line

Is there a way that I can advance to a certain line on a blank page? I have a preformatted form that needs to be filled in on a certain line of the page, for instance, 3 7/8" from the top of the page. How can I do that?

Hi eliz.bell,

Is this a scanned form, a word form using formfields/activeX controls/content controls, or something else?

It's just a form that needs to be filled out in about three places. It is not a Word form or a scanned form, just a form that was mailed to me asking for some information. I would rather not print the information.

Hi eliz.bell,

If it's a paper form, there's no way of getting anything onto it from Word without using a printer.

If it's an emailed Word document that contains anything other that an image of the form, it must already have some structure you could access for typing into the relevant areas. You can then save the changed document to your 'My Documents' folder and email it to wherever it needs to go (eg back to the sender) without the need to print it.

I plan on using a printer to fill out the form, but how can I get Word to advance to a given spot as mentioned above?

I meant print and in write by hand, not print with a printer when I said I would rather not print the information in the form.

Hi eliz.bell,

Without a template to work with within Word, the simplest solution is to use a combination of paragraph breaks, line breaks, tabs & spaces to position the text approximately where you want it.

There is also an ADVANCE field in Word for doing as you ask (see under Insert|Quickparts|Field) and this can be used to giver quite precise positioning - the units it works with are points (72pt = 1in).

Okay, so if I want to move down the page 3 7/8" I go to Insert, Text, Quick Parts, Field, Advance. Then check the Vertical Position box and enter the number 279 as 1" = 72 pts x 3 + the extra 63 points for the 7/8". Cool. It is very accurate. After trying this out I then tried moving down another 1 1/2 " (108 pts) from the original 279; however, it then put me up to that point at the top of the page, it did not move me further down from my last point. Okay, I can deal with that. Just make a new document for the second insertion. Thanks for your help.

Hi eliz.bell,

If you use an ADVANCE field to move down the page 279 points, insert some text, then use another ADVANCE field coded to move down the page 108 points, you should end up 383 points down the page (it does for me). The new position will, however, be offset to the right of the previous line by however many characters you had inserted on that line. The only way to avoid the offset would be to insert a paragraph break or manual line break after the previous line of text, then use the ADVANCE field to move down the page by, say, 96 points (assuming a 12pt line height).
