Thumbs down inserting diacritical marks: symbols

This is a comment to Microsoft regarding the insertion of symbols!

When using the regular American keyboard and need to use foreign words with symbols, the process is too difficult and unwieldy.

The box holding the symbols is much too big, and covers too much space on the screen. There’s a lot of space above and below that’s unnecessary.

It should not be necessary to click on the symbol (usually twice) and then click on Insert. One click on the symbol should be enough.

The keyboard shortcuts are extremely and unnecessarily complicated—not usable.

The page jumps when the symbol is inserted—that is, you’re working in the middle of the page, and when you insert a symbol, the line you’re typing on pops up to the top of the page. This is disconcerting, and you have to reorient yourself on the page each time.

It should be simple and easy to insert a diacritical mark while typing quickly.

Years ago when I had a keyboard with a set of extra numbers on the right side, I could simply type in the ascii codes fast in order to get my symbols. That was faster than picking them out one by one from the symbols box—!

Using the keyboard adapted for the other language might conceivably be a solution. However, it’s too difficult to switch keyboards, and you wouldn’t want to have to do that in the middle of a sentence.

Interesting. Here on a PC, the line does not jump to the top. There is no jumping at all. Apparently that is a Mac thing?

I don't often have to go to the dialog box, as the 20 symbols I use most are in the recently-used list and I just click on one once to insert it. See attached. Is that a difference between Word for Mac and for PC?

I like it that I have an opportunity to go to the dialog box and select a symbol and read about it before deciding to insert, but I see your point about it taking multiple clicks to insert if you have to use the dialog box.

I am glad there is no jumping on a PC; that would be most annoying.

I see no recently used list! The program must be pretty different. But don't you find that the symbol box uses too much of the page. It could be helpful to leave it open, but it's too much of an obstacle on my small screen, so I have to open it each time I need a symbol. Also, I didn't mention, usually you need two clicks on the letter (with diacritical) and then one click on insert--that's three, and then you lose your place on the page. I'm hoping Microsoft will notice this clumsiness.

No, it isn't! This is not a Microsoft-run forum ...

Microsoft has its own feedback pages: http://www.microsoft.com/mac/contact
