Default HELP - problem with disappearing spaces

I'm using Word 2010 and 2007, and in both I'm having a problem with disappearing spaces in several files. Each time I save and close one of the files, the next time I open that file, spaces that should separate words have vanished, so I wind up with dozens of places where words have run together. So every time I open a file, I have to comb it to see if there are lost spaces. I'm trying to do a freelance editing job and this is eating my lunch on time loss.

As far as I can tell there is no pattern to this problem. It's not always in the same places.

Anyone know anything about this? I'm working on files that were originally sent me by a client in Australia. But I opened the original files and saved them locally several times, and for spell checking I have the language on my installation of Word set to Australian English, so there shouldn't be any language mismatches or hidden special characters (I assume). And this just started yesterday. Before yesterday, I worked on these files for more than a week without noticing any such problem.

Anyone have any ideas how to solve this? I'm at my wit's end. I'm have to keep checking the files again and again for the exact same problem each time I open them and it's taking way too long.

Thanks in advance. Happy New Year.

Hi klanch,

Does the document print properly? If so, it's probably a display driver issue. Check the display card maker's web site for an updated driver.

Do you have the same fonts installed that your Australian client has used in the document? If not, Word may have trouble rendering it correctly. In such cases, if the font has not been embedded in the document, Word substitutes another font but this can't be expected to reproduce the original layout.

Since Word uses the current printer's driver to manage document layout, the problem may stem from there. However, the first thing to do would be to ensure there isn't a problem with Word itself. To that end, do a repair via Word Options|Resources|Diagnose. Then try deleting & reinstalling your printer, preferably with the manufacturer's latest drivers.

Default Solution - HELP - problem with disappearing spaces

We had the same problem with loosing spaces by co-writing a master-thesis using MS Office 2010, MS Office 2007 and Mac Office 2008. We eventually found out that the normal.dotm in the MS Office 2007 was corrupt. Just deleting the normal.dotm file was sufficient. Word generates a new proper one on next use. It's apparently not that seldom that a corrupt normal.dotm causes problems. The normal.dotm can be found in the <user>/application data/microsoft word/template. It's a hidden folder. Configure the file explorer to show hidden directories and files.
