Unhappy Oops password protected word !!!

Is there any way I can recover the password I set for a Word document. I wrote the password down then typed it in (twice) as instructed but seem to have made an error whilst typing and now I cannot open the document. Hope you can help me as I need this document for my course work.

Thanks in advance

There are a couple possibilities to solve this. If the document isn't heavily formatted, you should be able to rename it from a .doc file to a .rtf file, and open it in Wordpad. Once it is opened in Wordpad just re-save it as a Word .doc file. You will likely lose a considerable amount of formatting using this method though.

Has an interesting trick to try and find your password by opening the file in Notepad.

Otherwise you're looking at a hack program to find or remove the password. Here is one example: http://www.petri.co.il/word-password-recovery.htm, but use any hack at your own risk.

Hope this helps.

To rename the file to a .rtf, you will first need to make sure that Hide Extensions is turned off. To do so, use the following steps:

1. Open your My Computer or My Documents folder.
2. Click on the Tools menu.
3. Click on Folder Options.
4. Click on the View tab.
5. Uncheck the box next to "Hide extensions for known file types".
6. Click OK.

With the setting unchecked, you should be able to see the .doc file extension on your document. Right click the document and click Rename. You will want to change just the last "doc" characters to "rtf".

Hope this helps.

Hi Guys, I have a problem now. Since trying the above fix I am unable to rename files now. Also having a problem with word and publisher having to close all the time. Application error 'The instruction at "0x05c65101" referenced memory at "0x00000004" memory could not be "read". Cklick on OK to end program.

I also had something come up about saving to the normal global template and cannot remember what this is about.

Please help as I am desperate now to fix my computer as I need it to work properly.

Thanks in advance

Default Possibility

On the password, since you wrote it down, is it possible that you had the caps lock on then, or, perhaps, when you tried to use it again? Or, that you inadvertently capitalized it?

I read your application error post also. The error messages are beyond my knowledge. However, you might do well to either uninstall and reinstall Word from your original CD, or use the "Fix problems" from the same CD, and see if that solves at least that problem.
