Default Replacing a single "l" with a double "ll"

I opened a large HTML document in my IE and then copied it into Word 2007. I have two difficultes with it, if someone can please help me.

(1)Wherever there is a double "ll" in a word, one l is missing and there is a blank space in its place. e.g. if the word is "following", it shows as
"fol owing".

If I do a search and replace saying that a single "l" followed by a space should be replaced with "ll" then I run into another problem when "l" is at the end of the word
e.g. "ful page"
here if I do the search and replace as above then it becomes "fullpage" - with no space between the words - then I have to manually go and seperate the words.

This brings me to my second problem. In many places in the document two words get joined e.g. "both boys" show as "bothboys" Is there some way I can set Spellcheck that if two correctly words have no space between them then it should automatically do so. I have Auto Correct on for the document, but that only works as you are typing in.

Any help would be appreciated

Thank you

MS

Hi MShroff,

I doubt there's a practical way around this, other than perhaps redoing the download. It seems strange that a web site might display the words correctly but not include all the characters in the output. Is it possible the characters are included, but you've used Paste Special > Unformatted text and that's clobbered characters that aren't supported by your current font? Usually, any such characters simply display as little squares.

Hi MShroff,

So does the problem exist when viewing the ebook, or when viewing the HTML file (eg in IE), or only in Word?

Hi MShroff,

OK, well that suggests the problem has to do with the conversion from the ebook format to HTML. Perhaps you should try a different ebook to HTML converter. I doubt it has anything to do with MS Office.

I did not do the conversion - I got it converted like that - and even I dont think its a WORD problem as such - what I am looking for is some kind of "find and replace" maybe with some wildcards or something which will help me. I am not good at wildcards. Is there some way I can specify in find that if l is in the middle of a word followed by a space then it should be replaced with ll and if l is at the end of a word it should be replaced with a ll followed by a space. Am I being too optimistic?

Sadly, yes, you're being too optimistic. With Find/Replace a 'word' is a string of characters with spaces or other puctuation marks at either end. Thus 'fol owed' is seen as two separate words in a Find/Replace operation, whilst 'runtogether' is seen as one word.

I am fairly proficient with both normal and wildcard Find/Replace operations and I can see no practical way of doing as you ask, other than to use an ordinary Find/Replace with 'Find' rather than 'Replace all' and choose in each 'found' case whether to Replace 'l ' with 'll'. There's nothing a Find/Replace operation can do to find 'missing' spaces, however - you'll need to use the spellchecker for that.
