Question Word 2003 settings .dot -> .doc

Using Word 2003.

Has created an intranet where you can download Word files .dot
The file opens in Word, but when you are saving so is the default setting .dot Though it should be set to .doc.

I checked the settings under options in Word - save, and .doc was set as the "standard format".

Anyone know how to get rid of the problem that it has been preset to .dot, when it really should be set to .doc?

Hi Ken,

Any reason the intranet files aren't in .doc format already? If you're using .dot files, they should be downloaded (not opened) from the intranet.

Unfortunately it is .dot files . When you click, you get to choose whether to open or save. and with same results, .dot whatever you choose

Yes, but if you save, then double-click on the saved file, Word will use the .dot file (which is a Word template) to create a new .doc file.

You still haven't explained why you need to have .dot files available on the intranet. If the idea is that the users should simply open the files from the intranet for editing, then .doc files would be more appropriate.

The idea was that you would not have to save it first as .dot and then resave it as .doc. It works fine with Word 2007 (open and save as .doc), but not in Word 2003 (open abd save as .dot as default).

But you have a point. Why do we have to use .dot in this context? Now i just need to figure out how to change the default save location in Word/Excel 2003.
