Those statistics suggest you had a range with 1417 words (about 2 pages full of text, plus graphics) selected.

hi Jamal,

I am unable to replicate that behaviour. With the macro using 'Selection', it only counts the selected range.

Question

Thank you for your patience Paul.

But really I’m stuck again with more manual work.

The Macro that you have developed still can’t count only the selected words despite the fact that I’ve switch the “activedocument” to “selection”

Please, see the attached image. In this document the total words count is 9. The selected ones are 5. But the Macro gives the total words count but not the selected ones!!!!!

How could I get the count for the selected words only using your great Macro?

Thank you

Jamal

what i might have done wrong?

thank you

Jamal

Hi Jamal,

As I said before, I cannot replicate this behaviour.

I suspect you have changed something else in the code. As you can see from the message box with the counts, the 'Headers' count doesn't line up with the others. In the code I provided, they all line up. I suggest re-copying the code from the earlier post and changing only the 'ActiveDocument' expression to 'Selection'.

Hi Jamal,

That tells me you had an error between the seat and the keyboard

Default Way to Make Macro Work Through "Review" Tab?

This is an awesome macro. The problem I'm having is that i have to click on Review tab and click word count from there to get the word count to update in the properties showing in windows explorer (and folders using "details" display). Is there a way to make this macro work through that function?

Hi jbosari,

There is no relationship between the macro and the stats returned by Windows Explorer. So, no, you can't do that.

Thanks for the help. I did find a simple solution. For anyone trying to get properties to display the proper word count, go into options and add the following shortcut to the quick access toolbar:

"Word Count..."

Now you can just click that button before saving to make sure the word count displays properly when you are viewing the closed Word file in windows Explorer. Even though the bar on the bottom left may show the correct word count, it won't display in the properties section when browsing in windows explorer unless you use this particular word count button.
