Default Merge field in header disappearing

Hey, thanks for taking the time to view this.

Ok, here's my problem: I am trying to create a document in Word 2010 with Mergefields in the header. The document is to be opened in a program called DocShuttle. When creating a new document to attach to a voice file in DocShuttle, the user is presented with several fields to fill in. These fields correspond with field codes in the Word document. I have copied and paste the corresponding field codes from an example document provided by DocShuttle into the new Word document I am trying to create.

On the first page of the document, but not in the header, is the field code for the person's name and visit date. I have these same field codes put into the header so they show up at the top of each page in the document.

Here's where it all goes wrong: The fields are filling in correctly on the first page (the part not in the header) and in the header on the second page (if the document has one). However, every time I keep typing and automatically create a new page, the field codes appear in the header but not filled in like the rest of the document. I open the header on to see what's wrong and suddenly the field codes are just plain text. It's no longer a field that I can toggle.

The worst part is that this seems to be completely arbitrary. Sometimes the document will load and the fields will carry over and fill in properly for each new page, sometimes they won't.

I have tried everything I can think of, searched everywhere, and been at this for hours, but I can't find a solution. I'm not a Word god, but I am fairly fluent, having used the program and various versions for many years. I'm completely at a lost except for just leaving a blank page at the end of each document so the header will format it correctly and just hoping that the people using this don't type past that page...

(oh, and it does this regardless of what version I make the document compatible with or what type of document I save it as)

Hi Medievalguy88,

It sounds like you have you document set-up with a 'Different first page' or 'Different odd and even' page layout. See under Page layout > Page Setup > Layout.

Hey Macropod, thanks for taking the time to reply. Yes, I do have "different first page" checked because the first page of each document has our client's company name and contact information at the top. (Though it's just written on the page, not embedded in anything) I don't want the subsequent header to appear on the first page and I don't want their large company info to appear at the top of every consecutive page.

I think the problem is that the program that I'm using the Word document in only runs its fill in code once, so any page not in existence with the header code visible at the time the program auto fills will not be filled in. :-\ The only solution I've come up with is to leave a few extra blank pages at the end of the document for spill over. The pages can simply be deleted if not used, though I wish it just automatically added the header. Thanks again though for your time. :-)
