Default Word retains printer settings

Hello,

I got an annoying problem in Word 2003 regarding printing.
It seems that Word keeps the printer settings, even after you closed Word.

Example:
The printer prints from tray 1 (default driver settings)

- Document A has been printed, (manually chosen) from paper-tray 4. (special paper)

- Word is closed.
- I open Document B and press print. Annoyingly this also prints from tray 4, however tray 1 should be default.

I discovered the settings are kept because of Outlook, which remains open all day. If Outlook is open, the settings are kept until you close both word and outlook. Is there any way I can work around this problem?

Excel doesn't have these problems, cause Outlook only uses Word as the mail editor.

Hi Nathalie,

Is your Office 2003 installation fully updated? Have you checked the printer manufacturer's website for an updated printer driver?

Yes, it is fully up to date.
It happens with all printers I'm afraid, so specific printer issues are excluded.

You should see it when Word and Outlook are open, you print to a special tray in Word, close Word and open another document. Printer settings are the same because the word editor in outlook remembers them. It is really annoying!

Hi Nathalie,

Try adding the following macro to Word's 'Normal' template:
Code:
Sub FilePrint()
Dim strPrtNm As String
strPrtNm = ActivePrinter
With Application.Dialogs(wdDialogFilePrint)
  If .Show = -1 Then ActiveDocument.PrintOut
End With
ActivePrinter = strPrtNm
End Sub
To see how to do this, see: www.gmayor.com/installing_macro.htm

The macro intercepts the File|Print dialog box. In doing so, it captures the curent printer's name, allows the user to change the printer & print, then restores the original printer. Since the first printer captured should be the default one, that's what it'll keep restoring. A bit of a pain if you want to send a series of documents to a different printer, but it should resolve the other difficulties.
