Default Margin 'above' footer text?

Office 2007

I asked this question as part of another resolved post and I'm still confused.

Problem: footer text too close to the last line of the body text

I was told, "You can increase the size of the bottom margin. Formatting the footer paragraph with more than the default 'before' space is probably what you really need, though."

and, "The demo document has a 2.5cm (1in) bottom margin, with the footer starting at 1.25cm (0.5in) from the edge. Nothing else special has been done in the way of footer formatting. Rather than playing around with the footer paragraph spacing, you may prefer to take the same approach"

I have done something that seems to work but doesn't seem to be what you all have suggested--not being able to find where you increase the 'margin' before.

Using Page Layout, Paragraph, Spacing, I increased the point size Before?
