"Research"-tab keeps popping up
Hello,
My problem is as follows: Every now and then, when I'm working in the Word-environment doing fairly typical stuff, a side-tab called "Research" pops up on the right side of the screen (the tab offers searching in enclopedias etc.). I have no idea what triggers this, it just happens randomly. If I close the tab, it pops up again every time I click on a text with the mouse-cursor. The way to get rid of it is usually to restart Word. Does anyone know what this is? Best regards, Friğrik |

Disabling research
I suspect that somehow a shortcut key or macro has become enabled, that opens the pane. The normal ones are Alt+R,R or right-click (or the Context key) +K. The first will hide or reveal the pane; it works like a toggle switch.
You may be able to disable the auto-appearing of the pane by using your original Office/Word disc. Go into the "Ad or Remove features and look around for a Research or Research Pane feature. I don't have mine available at the moment, or I'd look it up for you. |

After fighting with this myself for years, I found out the answer.
From Word, press Alt-F11 to open the VB Editor. Press Ctrl-G to open the Immediate Window. Type this line and press Enter: Application.CommandBars("Research").Enabled = False |

Hi Jon,
A better solution might be to simply avoid (ie don't type Alt-R-R) or disable the keyboard shortcut.

Paul -
And how is the keyboard shortcut disabled? I tried whatever I could think of and whatever was suggested in innumerable online sources, and nothing worked for me (or for most others, as far as I could tell from comments). Since I have never intentionally used the Research task pane (I prefer doing my research in multiple tabs of a separate browser window), it makes perfect sense to completely disable the task pane. Using the Alt key with the mouse is an invaluable functionality, which enables selection of a rectangular block of text which is not the full column wide and which can be pasted elsewhere in its block configuration. This is valuable to me when I am editing guitar tablature. The problem is that selecting a block only a single character wide would not select the block, but instead pop open the most useless task pane I've ever encountered. |

Hi Jon,
The one you most likely want to remove is done via: File|Options|Customize Ribbon > Keyboard Shortcuts: Customize > Categories: Commands not in Ribbon > Commands: ResearchLookup > Current Keys: Ctrl-Shift-O > Remove.

Yeah, that seems like it should work, but I've seen it before and tried it.
Just to be sure, I tried it again. Guess what? That stupid Research Pane still pops up. Because the keyboard shortcut isn't the same as the Alt-Click that also activates the Research pane. So I've disabled it again. Thanks anyway. |

Research Tabe in MS Word
I've found that the quickest way to get rid of the Research Tab is to hit Alt+rr (click the "r" letter key twice in a row while holding down the ALT button). This also activates the Research Tab if you didn't already have it open.

Solution to release "frozen" Outlook Research Pane locking typing in message area
I've only experienced this issue since teleworking as there is a lag in the keyboard talking to the apps in the Remote Desktop environment.
I use ALT + TAB extensively at the office PC, however, it only works from my home PC environment rather than the Remote Desktop environment. So, by habit, I press the ALT key often and below is how it gets activated: To open the Research pane, do one of the following: Press Alt+Click the left mouse key in the selected word, phrase, or name. What was happening for me is that when the Research Pane was open, Outlook wouldn't let me type anything, even after I closed the Research Pane by clicking the X in the upper right corner. The solution by this poster, ALT + rr worked for me by "releasing" the blocking of my typing in the Outlook message screen, thanks! |
