Default Word 2003: Document map

How does Word Document Map determine what to include as an item. The Help says it is styled headings, but I see a lot more, e.g. some but not all lines starting "*".

First, the Document Map in Word 2003 can break a document if you use it to rearrange things. This is also true in Word 2007.
If you just use it to navigate or see the document structure, you are fine.

It will show anything with an outline level rather than a body text level. This is set in the paragraph formatting dialog.

For rearranging, use Outline view. Outlining in Microsoft Word

You can also control the paragraph level using the Outlining Toolbar.

Thanks. Out of interest, what kind of "break"? Just muddled content? Or corrupt file?

Do not understand Normal+Bold. You must be displaying formatting as styles (which I virtually never do).

I believe corruption. It has been more than 20 years since I've encountered this problem because I stopped using the document map until it became the Navigation Pane in Word 2010 and this was fixed.

Where's this option for displaying formatting as styles, please?

Thanks for the corruption warning.

While I think it is an option in Word 2003, I no longer remember for sure, and I looked. In the Ribbon versions it is in the options for the Styles Pane.

Resources on styles:
If you are going to persist using 2003 take a look at:
I haven't really updated this much lately but had a lot prior to the Ribbon versions. I strongly recommend:
Special Edition Using Office 2003 by Woody Leonhard and Ed Bott
Word 97 Annoyances (pub. O'Reilly)

Word 2003 for Law Firms

The last two are really about customizing Word.

Word 2003 has a Task Pane offering Styles and Formatting having no such option.

Thanks.
