Word 2003 hyperlink field edit not taking effect

but these two deny it:

Any idea what's going on?

Also weirdly the "PDF.pdf" part of each display text has an underline of different colour, and though it does respond to CTRL+click, it is not recognised by right-click menu commands as a hyperlink:
