I sent my last big book out for external editing and moved on to my next project. In the meantime, it was brought to my attention that my copy of MS Word might have been pirated. It was Office 2021 LTSC (or something like that). So I bought a legal copy of Office 365.
However, the previous file now causes Word to hang repeatedly. It is ~300 pages long. All styles, no graphics etc. If I hit CTRL P to print a page, I have to wait like 7 minutes for the print dialog to appear. And editing is impossible. Only viewing in draft mode helps a little. Is this what I deserve for being a loyal, law-abiding, registered user? ![]() I know how to tweak Word to speed it up, but I doubt anything there could be causing it to be so messed up. What could REALLY be going on? Thank you, and have a good day! Susan Flamingo UPDATE: I started Word in safe mode, and while it is a little faster, it is still choking and hanging on the file. So does this mean the file is damaged, and if so, what can I do about it |

Try repairing your Office installation and starting it without any 3rd-party apps (which is what safe mode achieves). If you have any 3rd-party apps installed and Word works better in safe mode than in normal mode, it's likely one of those 3rd-party apps is the problem - it might need to be uninstalled & reinstalled.
Document corruption can usually be resolved by: 1. Create a new document. 2. Insert a new paragraph break at the very end of the original document. 3. Copy everything except new paragraph break in the original document. 4. Paste the copied content into the new document. 4a. Do the same for any headers/footers that weren't carried across. 4b. Do the same for any macros & userforms in the old document. 5. Close the old document. 6. Save the new document over the old one.
