Hi all!
I made this account just to ask this question. Essentially, I'm trying to import a Word document into Adobe FrameMaker. FM has a style mapping feature, only when it processes the document, it detects nearly a hundred paragraph style types! For context, I've inherited this document as part of my job, so I'm not sure why or how it's recognizing all the paragraph types. All the tutorials online show FM detecting 1-5 types, if that. I understand that this isn't an FM forum- I thought I'd start looking at the beginning of the equation, the Word document, and see if there's anything on this end that's throwing me this curve-ball. I've used the Styles menu and tried to delete styles that are not used, but the import still reads as having a massive amount of styles. Is there a way I can go deeper into the Word document, so to speak, and find and remove any additional styles that might be hanging on? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!! A million thanks in advance!!! Last edited by cdotdark; 08-06-2024 at 03:11 PM. Reason: extra line breaks |

Every Word document actually contains a minimum of >250 built-in styles covering paragraph, character, table and list styles.
You can delete custom styles but the interface only 'pretends to delete built-in styles'. In reality, Word sets the style as hidden and resets its attributes to default so a built-in style is never truly deleted. I haven't used Framemaker for many years but if the import is bringing in all styles regardless of whether they are being used then you might just need to live with that. Perhaps you could export to RTF. In RTF it would be possible to edit the text file and kill off styles with judicious editing - but you would need to be desperate because it won't be a simple task.
