In a document I have been working on I occasionally get these little arrow things appearing next to the text. I have no idea what they do. Can someone explain what they are and whether I need to get rid of them in my document?

*EDIT TO UPDATE* I think I have actually learned that somehow parts of my document ended up in Heading 1 style, which was screwing up a few things. I probably don't need any help with this one now.

As you have correctly diagnosed, the little arrows (or triangles) are shown next to headings. For each heading, the arrow indicates that you can collapse or expand the subordinate text paragraphs beneath the heading.

Expanding on Stefan's correct response, they indicate a paragraph set to have an outline level other than Body Text. All the built-in heading styles have an outline level.
