I would guess the answer to this question is going to be no, but grandma said
"never say never".

I have a main text that sends the reader to many other locations in the doc (this was instead of using footnotes).

So from within the main text, I am CR to headers (which is not real, Word creates a bookmark there and links to that bookmark. It sounds like a little bit of cheating...).

Now when I review the area of the doc that has been referenced from the main text I jump from heading to heading using the navigation pane.

Is there a way to check if a certain heading has indeed been CR from the main text?



Does a heading "know" that it has been cross-referenced somewhere else?

No, other than examining the unnamed hidden bookmarks to see where they go. Even then, it might be a bookmark created when you create a Table of Contents. (The names given the hidden bookmarks by a TOC and Cross-Reference have different names, however.)

I had assumed that Word would not create multiple hidden bookmarks for the same material, but was wrong.I just tested.

• If there is already a bookmark created by the TOC, another bookmark is created when you add a Cross-Reference.
• If there is already a bookmark created by a Cross-Reference, another one is created when you add another Cross-Reference to the same item.

Note: Be careful of these hidden bookmarks!
If you want to add something to your text before a heading, go to the end of the paragraph before that heading and make your addition. Do not go to the start of the heading and type and press Enter, even if creating a new heading in the same style. If you do the latter, your text will be included in the bookmark even though not part of the heading. This is even trickier when the hidden bookmark is to text in the middle of a paragraph created by a TOC or a Cross-Reference.

Just adding to Charles' inputs - No, Word doesn't make available the information of whether a Heading is used as an anchor for a Cross Reference but there are clues that could be used to determine if this is the case.

1. If the heading range includes NO bookmarks (or only a _TOC bookmark) then it you can say it has not been used in a cross reference. If it does have a bookmark of any type then it MAY have a cross reference.
2. It would be possible to create a macro to show what bookmarks are included in the range and then the macro could toggle all field codes and do a search for each bookmark name. If the search reveals a hit in a Ref field then you 'know' there is a bookmark to that range.
