Default Replacing Straight Quotes and Apostrophes with Curly Ones

I just copied a fair amount of text from Notepad into Word 2000.

How can I replace all of the the straight apostrophes with curly apostrophes in my new document? I seem to be only able to replace them one at a time.

Same question - how can I replace all of the straight open-quote marks with curly open-quote marks, and all of the straight close-quote marks with curly close-quote marks?

UPDATE:
I found out what I was doing wrong. I solved my problem and documented what I did.

I assume you turned on the AutoCorrect setting to use curly quotes and then used the Replace feature, replacing " with " and ' with '.

If it was some other method, please share here.

No, I didn't use the AutoCorrect function. I don't recall ever using that function . Here are the notes I made while I was performing the operation:

TO REPLACE STRAIGHT QUOTES WITH CURLY QUOTES

1. In Word 2000, click Edit>Replace.... A Find and Replace dialog box appears.

2. Click the Replace tab and then click in the Find what: field.

3. If Format: Style: appears between the Find what: and the Replace with: fields, click the Format button at the bottom of the dialog box, then click the Style…. A list should appear.

4. Click Style.... A Find Style dialog box appears.

5. In the Find Style dialog box, click (no style) and then OK. There should then be nothing between the Find what: and the Replace with: fields.

6. Click in the Replace with: field and repeat Steps 3, 4, and 5. There should now be nothing below the Find what: and the Replace with: fields.

7. Copy and paste a straight open-quote mark into the Find what: field.

8. Type or copy and paste a curly open-quote mark into the Replace with: field.

9. Click the Replace All button. When the process has completed, click the Replace All button again just to be sure all instances have been changed. When this is completed, both the open-quote and the close-quote marks should all be curly.

10. Repeat this process for the straight apostrophe marks.

Using AutoFormat as you type is easier.
