Default Creating a table of contents displaying multiple combined quotes from each section

Hello,

I am trying to create a Word Table of Contents which includes quotes from each section. I have several short sections which have some sentences in bold, and I would like to be able to see these sentences in the Table of Contents.

I have used the method in the first video below:
Video: Advanced tables of contents - Microsoft Support

I have given my Bold Text a style name, and assigned it to Level 4 in the TOC. This method works to an extent, but not consistently. I have three problems:

  1. The bold text is made up of several discontinuous sentences. I would like to have all the sentences displayed in the TOC somehow, but currently the TOC is only showing the first sentence per section, even if there are others bolded in that section.
  2. For some subheadings, the bold text does not show at all in the TOC, even though I have gone through and checked it's the correct style.
  3. Currently, it looks like that even if I got more than one sentence of the bolded text to show per section, each sentence would be on a different line in the TOC. I would like to have the individual sentences in one block, looking something like this: "This is the first bolded bit...this is the second bolded bit...this is the third bolded bit."

Thanks for any help!

The TOC will pick up Paragraph styles, not Character styles, and only sometimes Linked styles. If you applied a built-in heading style to selected text, you used its Linked style attribute.
You can use TC fields or place your quotations in Paragraph styles that are picked up by your Table of Contents. I suspect that you will want to have a Quotation Style for your quotations as the simplest method. You could modify and use the built-in one.
You will need to tell your Table of Contents that you want to include things marked in that style (or use Table Entry (TC) fields).

Thanks so much! After some application of paragraph styles and style separators, everything that's meant to be showing up in the table of contents is actually showing up.

However - I have multiple quotes for each chapter in my document, that I would like to all show on one line. Currently it looks like this:

Chapter 1
Quote one
Quote two
Quote three
I would like it to look like:

Chapter 1
Quote one...Quote two...Quote three
Is there any hope? I know I can use TC Fields, like this: Inserting a highly-customized Table of Contents - Legal Office Guru
But I think that would remove the advantage of being able to highlight the quotes directly in the text - as I understand it I'd just have to write the summary directly in the field rather than pulling it from my text.

Thanks for the help!

Look at Susan Barnhill's page.
If these paragraphs immediately follow one another in the body, you could use a manual line break instead of the Enter key at the end of the first two. In the TOC, this will become a space.
