Numbering of pages messed up when adding columns to page.
I have a fairly large document that I am trying to number correctly.
I was able to get the numbers started on the page I wanted, but some of the pages needed to have columns added (so that I can fit in all the relevant information). When I added in some columns, I think it added a section break. There is also a column break. This seems to have royally screwed things up. When I do this, the page numbers on the next page are "2", rather than the number it is supposed to be (363). I've included five screenshots in this post, which are in order. Screenshot 2 should be page 363. Screenshot 3 should be page 364, Screenshot 4 should be 365 and screenshot 5 should be page 366. Please help, as this is doing my brain in. |

Page numbering is connected to sections.
When you change columns, you add sections. What gets carried over when you start a new section? One of those things carried over is the setting to restart page numbering. Try going to each page 1 and using the Format page numbers dialog to tell Word to continue the numbers from the previous section. If needed, you can use Continuous Page Numbering Add-In. Fixed it, yay!
Thanks for your response. I'm not sure if that add-on you mentioned works, as I couldn't install it on my work computer.
However deep in the body of the site you recommended for me I found a solution. For anyone who ever has a similar problem to me, the way to fix it is to put a Section Break under the last part of the page you wish to dissociate from the numbering of the next page. You then click on Insert --> Footer --> Edit Footer --> [and this step is the most important one] Link to Previous That will stop the footer on the page you are working on linking to the number on the previous page. A tip I learned is to make sure and click on the Link to Previous button prior to putting in the new number. If you add it after you have typed in the new number it won't work. |

Link to Previous is a setting in a Section.
Putting in the section break creates a new section. It is the default setting. In each section, there are six places where it can be used, one for each header and each footer. Header/Footer Settings Recap Your employer may block use of Add-Ins. |
