Hi friends!



Is it possible to build a multiple-level TOC based on headings exclusively in the FN area?

Until now I have been using the TC field and it works fine but I cannot add secondary entries (correct?)

It seems that word totally ignores the "heading 1" for building a TOC when that style is in the FN area.

Now I see that my TC fields are actually not in the FN area but in the text area and when they are in the FN area they are ignored.

So I will have to build the second level manually with a macro:

But My VBA programming days are long gone (about 25 years ago) so I am turning here for assistance:

I need a macro that will scan a long Word doc (including the Footnotes area) and get the text of a certain style, and copy that text to a different page with the pg# that it is on.

I would think that a macro like this exits already somewhere.

If you mean you cannot have different levels in the TOC based on TC fields, you are mistaken. When you create the TC field, you can assign the TOC level for that field.

There you go - you've worked out that TC fields will do what you wanted to achieve.

To get TC fields to show in a TOC at different levels, you simply include the switch and level in the field.
{TC "This is text that will be TOC 1" \l 1}
{TC "TOC 3 is the style that this one will use in the TOC" \l 3}

As you have discovered, these TC fields need to be in the body of the document (not the footnote area), positioned immediately after the Footnote Reference that they apply to.

Then your Table of Contents field which interleaves headings with the TC fields would include switches for both
{TOC \t "Heading 1,1Heading 2,2" \f \h}
or
{TOC \o "1-4" \f \h}

After buckling to the extreme pressures put on me by the noble members of this forum
I have redone my doc and am now doing it page by page. No more such long FN, everything is on top. Does allow me much more freedom to use the margin area. I now fully understand that this was the correct way to do things.

But now something else is driving me crazy: Everything has slowed down to a tortus!

When I open my old DOc, which is over 500 pages long, and hit the PGDN key it flies like lightning. In the new doc which is only 50 pages long now, I hit the PGDN keyt and have to wait till it moves!

What is the word is going on here? Cannot be add-ins or anything like that because both files are running in the same environment.

Is Word taking revenge from me?

Manual page breaks and section breaks can slow documents down. So can direct formatting (vs. style-based formatting).

Perhaps you need to show us a sample of how you have now arranged your layout. If you are overusing a layout feature that takes lots of pagination processing then perhaps that is causing your speed issues.

I have no other theory about this doc other than it is possessed

I manually copied a whole bunch more stuff from the FN of the original DOC and now it is working faster (not as fast as the old doc but moving closer

Totally flabergasted.

I have learned here overtime to do everything with style so that is covered. I have 10 text boxes in the margin that I added as a test, but would that slow things down so much? I still am allowing spell check because I make a lot of typos due to health-impaired motor skills
The only real difference between this and the old doc is that I have in the new doc, a graphic in the header (a nice separator) but it would be odd to think that is causing my issues.

Are you also removing the old FN entries? Those remnants could be adding to the complexity of the file and slowing things down

Well mostly.

I have always wanted to be able to make footnotes to footnotes which of course is impossible in Word. So I put what would usually be in a footnote to the footnote into parentheses within the footnote.

But now since I put everything on top I have taken out those things that were in the parentheses and put them in the footnotes. But they are not much material.

Regarding the speed issues: when I constructed this new document I pasted into it some material that was in another document (not from the original but in a third document) and when I scroll down in the new document when it hits the material that I pasted from that third document things slow down. So this might be indicative of something that's causing the problem. However, I cannot imagine that. There are no special things there.

We have to get rid of this demon!
