Setup runs when opening a Word document
I'm using MSOffice Standard 2007 on a Win7 64-bit desktop. Recently "Setup" has started running ("Please wait while MSOffice prepares the necessary files") whenever I open a Word document. If I cancel the setup, the document eventually opens. If I let it run, the document eventually opens. If I have an open Word document either on the desktop or minimized, the doc opens without problem. No error messages. I did a 'repair' using an original MSOffice Standard 2007 CD and it says that it completed ok and rebooted...problem still present. It doesn't matter whether I start the doc from a shortcut, by double-clicking on the doc itself, or single-click on the doc and do an OPEN or OPEN WITH. It doesn't matter whether it's in DOC or DOCX format. Sometimes the 'preview' for the doc works, in which case the doc opens without issue. Other times the 'preview' is blank and it insists on doing a 'setup' before opening. I've let them go through the 'setup' and open the docs, edited/saved the doc, closed the doc, then immediately went back to the doc to open it again and it insists on running 'setup' again. (!!) I get the same result whether I'm opening an existing doc or just starting Word with a blank doc..."Please wait while MSOffice prepares the necessary files".
Excel, Outlook etc are unaffected. I did a search of threads here and found nothing matching this behavior. Has anyone ever seen this before? How did you correct it? Last edited by tekctrl; 01-19-2024 at 11:08 AM. |

I suspect that you have multiple versions of Word on your computer.
See Registry Hack - Dual version registry hack in Toolbars and Word 2007-2021(365) by Graham Mayor, MVP Search the page for Registry. |

I've had both Office 2007 Standard and Office 2010 Professional on my desktop for years and it never did this.
After the 'repair' failed I ran an 'install' of 2007 Standard to over-write the Office executables hoping that the issue would disappear. It didn't. I can uninstall both 2007 and 2010 and reinstall one or the other but I'm nervous about losing essential info. I do have backups but would prefer to Not have to recover from them if at all possible. |

Word 2010 is superior in every way to Word 2007.
However, the Registry fix in the page I linked lets you have both versions without it flicking you into Setup. |

Checked out your link. Sorry to say that there is no "piceditclass" at that registry location or anywhere else in the registry (I did a search of the entire registry) so I can't change it to "NoRereg" or change the value to "DWORDVALUE". I did notice that the registry does have 8.0, 10.0, 12.0, 14.0, 15.0, & 16.0 however. Could this be confusing the system? Since none of my docs have macro's, I'm uncertain of the applicability there.

You are correct, I was mis-reading the instructions as telling me to find the entry 'NoRereg' and rename it. My bad. I followed the instructions and saved it and will now reboot...crossing my fingers.

Post-reboot, neither Word2007 nor Word2010 will run now...they both freeze at the splash screen. Both are being blocked by the anti-malware as 'exploits'. It never did That before. You're correct that over the years there have been several different versions of MSOffice on this desktop. I've had it a long time and it has always done what needed doing. This has gotten so messed up now that I'm just going to run a 'backup' and uninstall/reinstall and cross my fingers that I don't lose any files in the process.

There is a process that must be followed strictly if installing multiple versions. Install the oldest version first and then install all updates for it. Then install newer version and all updates.
Given that you have Office 2010 I cannot understand why you would want to install Office 2007 as it is by far the inferior version. There isn’t an issue with document compatibility so I just don’t see the need, unless you are a VBA developer and require it for testing client code. Like Italophile, I do not understand why you want to keep Word 2007 when you have Word 2010.
Word 2010 works flawlessly on any files that were created using Word 2007. Word 2010 restores AutoText and AutoComplete. Word 2010 gives the ability to modify the Ribbon within the user interface. The only reason I ever had it active on my computers was to assist in answering questions and to produce screenshots from it. I never used it for work because it was, in my opinion fatally flawed. I used 2003 until Word 2010 was released. That said, I used the registry edit method over a number of years to keep Office 2007 from re-installing when something was used. I assume that you made backups of your registry before making any changes. You can restore it from that backup. |
