Default Word file size increases with Save

I just discovered that my resume file has increased in size from when it was established in August, 2010. Originally the August document (saved as *.doc) was 44KB. I recently opened it, deleted one word, and resaved it and the file size jumped to 118KB. I tested this on several other Word files and the same thing is happening. I am lost as to what is causing this. Any ideas?

I am using Word 2007 on an HP pavilion laptop running Windows Vista. Thanks.

UPDATE: By saving the *.doc files as *.docx this problem does not occur. Unfortunately no one without Word 2007 and newer can read the files.

Default Size jump

The newer .docx format, which is based on the new open format XML language, compresses documents when saving them, which might account for the difference in saving. You would need to provide more info respecting the .doc files. Were they created with 2003 or 2007? When you created them, before saving, were they .docx or did you open Word, save as .doc, and then enter your data in the document? I'm guessing that the compression is at work somehow, from origination.

Default More info

I used 2007 Word to compose the original documents. I saved them as *.doc and they were approximately 45KB. I opened them months later and deleted one word, then just hit the SAVE icon which then would have kept the *.doc format. When I checked the size of the newly saved documents, they had all more than doubled in size to nearly 118KB (after deleting a word!).

As an experiment, I took these now-large files and saved them as *.docx, and they returned to a small file size of about 44KB.

Saving files in *.doc format means to me that more people will be able to read them if they have older versions of Word. That is why I use it.

Thanks for any help.
