Default Word 2019 doing bizarre things I'm not sure I can describe...

Windows 11 Pro, i9-12900, NVidia 4060 GPU, 64GB memory, Office 2019 - ordinary desktop system.

I recently installed an NVidia 4060 Platinum, BUT I ALSO recently installed the Windows 23H2 update, and I'd be far more suspicious of that, than I am of the GPU change. But I COULD be wrong.

Word works fine when writing, then at some point - maybe a half dozen lines, it doesn't quite show where the cursor is, sometimes is hides the last letter written, or a partial or entire line goes blank but if you move the cursor over the line it returns. Or when erasing, it doesn't show what's being erased - possibly hiding a letter or section of text. It's difficult to describe, but extremely annoying...

And yes, the new GPU is COMPLETELY up to date and using the current STUDIO drivers. As is Windows.

Rebooting hasn't made any difference and I haven't found any settings in Windows that would seem to have anything to do with how Word would work.

The system has been checked for any viruses or malicious software, including running the MS Safety Scanner software, and there's nothing.

If anybody has a rational, reasonable idea, please let me know.

I'm going to try switching the 4060 from the Studio drivers to the game drivers and hope it helps Word. At this point, after a minute or two of use, it gets so glitchy that it's largely unusable.

I DON'T think it's the GPU. I think it's a lot more likely that it's something from the 23H2 update.

Well, here's a thought: could it be that your version of Office is almost five years out of date?

There are people (although not many) using Word 97.
I know more than a few who regularly use Word 2003.

Office 2019 is not out of date, or even out of support.

I did a google search and found hits saying that the NVidia causes problems with OneNote, Word and Outlook. There is also an extensive discussion on Reddit resulting in a suggested fix which says you need to go to a Windows Power Profile and disallow CPU Core Parking.
Do you get any leads there that help?

It was just a thought. For that matter I know people who still try to use Photoshop 4 on Windows 11, and they have all kinds of issues. I do think the Nvidia issue brought up by Guessed is more likely.

I went over to Reddit and tried the topic Guessed suggested. It requires a LOT of wading through arcane terms and wild side trips, but eventually I found a reference to changing the way applications function in the NVidia control panel.

I changed the way Word and Outlook are configured there and I'm hopeful it will correct the issue. The instructions are mostly applicable though there is no setting for "preferred refresh rate" in my NVidia Control Panel.

I'll need to do some editing in Word this morning and hopefully the glitch won't occur.

Didn't work. Word is still a mess.

From what I read, the "nVidia" issue didn't occur until Windows update 22H2, which would fit my situation - my desktop was on 21H2, and it never installed 22H2, so when 23H2 showed up I had to update all the way to 23H2. And... instant problems.

I didn't get that it was the refresh rate causing the problem. I thought it was related to Core Parking and was fixed by changing the power profile. This is part of the instructions that I thought was relevant
Quote:
# The solution
Windows 11 power profile which disallows CPU Core Parking
Approach a) Install freeware tool "ParkControl" (Link) and disable Core Parking
Approach b) Install freeware tool "Process Lasso" (Link) and activate its power profile "Bitsum Highest Performance" (which has Core Parking disabled implemented)
Approach c) Manually edit the existing Windows power profile via PowerCfg.exe (explanation further below on Link)

Check if core parking is disabled via
a) Windows Task Manager "Performance tab" > "Logical CPU view" > hover mouse over each CPU core > no core parking displayed > success!
b) ParkControl / Process Lasso: CPU load graphs showing no parked cores
Being that simple to implement one can easily reproduce the solution working by switching power profiles.

That may very well be. I could have been trying the wrong changes.

Unfortunately, though I saw the entry about core parking, there wasn't nearly enough information that was simple enough for me to understand what I wold need to do to implement that fix...

Is there somewhere there are simple, idiot-proof instructions?

I would try Approach a and find a website that can give you the free tool they suggested you install and use. Like this one ParkControl – Tweak CPU Core Parking and More

I presume approach A is the one that requires two, 3rd party pieces of software to be installed (Parkcontrol and Process lasso), and making changes to the O/S?

If this is a widely enough known problem with the NVidia cards and has been going on since 22H2, why hasn't Microsoft or NVidia done anything OFFICIAL about it?

Not that I don't think y'all are great folks, but I'm a little reluctant to start shoving unknown software on here based on a conversation over on Reddit... They may ALSO be great, reliable folks, but Reddit always seems like the equivalent of the guy knocking on your front door trying to convince you that you need a new roof.

I'll go back over there an relook at the topic, 'cause in my experience, touching anything to do with Windows in an "unusual" manner can have three outcomes. And TWO of them are bad.

I read that as being three separate approaches rather than a single one. I assume the approaches were listed in order of increasing complexity.

I agree that installing software on a reddit users advice can be dodgy and that it is up to you to decide whether your level of annoyance exceeds the risk. All I can say is that you can also do further research on what Core Parking is and how to manage it. A google search for some of the keywords will reveal threads in more reputable places including Microsoft and NVidia forums with the same suggestions and feedback from other users who say they resolved the issue using those suggestions.

You do already have Powercfg.exe on your Windows installation so you can learn the command line switches and make test changes on your machine without installing strange software that offers to make that easier.

I'm going to have to go back to Reddit tomorrow, and try to wade through this whole bizarre topic.

I put ParkControl software on, and opened it... Then realized I'm going to have to figure out how THIS works now and what it's doing.

I'll deal with that tomorrow...
