word file size
I downloaded a PDF to Word converter. It works find but the doc file it created is 512 mb. When I try to open this file I get an error "word cannot open this file because it is larger than 512 megabytes". The PDF file is only 582 KB in size. It is 8 pages long and contains 12 illustrations. What do I need to do? BTW there is also a file with the same name but with a RTF extension that I didn't create and it's 50.9 MB in size.
Thanks, Jim |

Conversion
Not all converters are equal, but such conversion tools are not perfect. Since a PDF is essentially a picture (depending on the source document and how it was turned into a PDF in the first place), the conversion to Word usually involves converting recognizable text to regular text and anything else to a picture or part of one. For instance, bordered tables are typically converted to a combination of the text and a picture which shows the borders. This picture is the size of the page and sits on the graphics layer of the Word document. Furthermore, when the text is converted, you usually end up with extensive formatting: each line is turned into its own paragraph (sometimes text boxes are created), and line-spacing is often made into a precise number of points, rather than a blanket "single space" or similar formatting. Hence, the file size can grow very considerably.
You may find it easier, in this case, to copy the text several paragraphs at a time and use Paste Special to bring them into Word as "Unformatted text." If you can copy the pictures separately and bring them over as well, that would be the way to go. |

Thanks
I'm using Adobe reader 9.2. I can't select chunks of text. I get an image when I select something and it pastes into word as a picture. I can crop it and re size it but that's about all. The PDF document has a lot of German and French sections in it and I wanted to edit them out. Oh well...

Another solution may be to print and scan the pdf to OCR, most scanners have a basic version software. then you are actually saving letters as characters rather than pictures. also you can edit then. slow work but gets good results.

PDF to Word
First of all, it appears that your PDF file was made from a file in which the text had already been turned into an image of some kind. I believe that that's the reason that you cannot copy it and paste is as text, presuming that you have tried the Paste Special/Unformatted text command. In this case, scanning to OCR is your best bet, as the other poster suggested.
As far as what size file Word can open, other factors, such as your computer's available memory, speed, and so on, effectively play a role. I have grimaced when seeing Word files of tens of megabytes, because they are unwieldy. Usually, the size is due to images contained therein, and there are ways of handling this (e.g., making images appear as placeholders, a setting in Word options), but, from your description, this is not going to help you. |
