Word 2007 docs always open as Calibri
I previously had Office XP on my computer and recently installed Office 2007. All the various components work correctly except for Word 2007. Each time I start this application, the blank template that opens has Calibri (Body) as the font. I opened the Font dialog box and set Arial as the default font, but when I close and reopen Word, Calibri is back. I looked for the Normal.dotm file (by first selecting to show hidden files) but could not find it. I did look in the correct location: C:\Documents and Settings\My UserName\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates.
I found a folder called Document Themes, and two files: $Normal (greyed out) and Normal11. There was no Normal.dotm. Is there any way of getting the Normal.dotm file back? Of course, what I ultimately want is to have new documents open with Arial as the default font. Thanks for any help. |

In the lower right-corner of the Font group is a dialog box launcher... tiny and has an arrow on it. Click it to open the Font dialog box.
Make your desired change and then click Set as Default button. |

I don't know much about the Normal.dotm file, except I don't have it. Also, I have the Normal11 file. And Arail won't stay selected as the default font. |

You click the button "Set as Default"?

Yes I did. The blank document that is open at the time changes to Arial font, but after I close it and reopen a new document, the font is back to Calibri. The font dialog box has also changed back to Calibri.

Do you have any add-ins, such as Adobe PDF maker?

If you want to open your Normal template, click Open, and in the Open dialog box, next to File name, is Templates. If no templates are displayed, you might have to use the 'files of type' drop-down so you can see templates.

Also, I'm not sure if I have Adobe PDF maker, or other add-ins. I will check when I get home from work. |

Normal.dotm
Word is supposed to automatically create a new Normal.dot(m) template when the original is deleted, renamed or moved. I would suggest loading your original Office DVD and running Repair on Word. I believe Repair comes up as an alternative to Install once you enter the DVD's menus. This should restore the missing template. You may have to reboot.
Presuming this does the trick, remember, of course, that to open the template itself, and not a document based on it, you must use Open, not double-clicking. |

I have the following three active add-ins: Adobe PDF Maker; Microsoft.Office.Education.Office; and Person Name (Outlook email recipients).
I have not done the Repair yet. Waiting to hear if there is something to be done about add-ins. |

I carried out the repair process, but the default font still remains at Calibri.
But... I copied the Normal.dotm file from my computer at work on to a memory stick and added it to the (normally) hidden file as noted in my earlier post. (C:\Documents and Settings\My UserName\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates). This time when I start Word 2007, lo and behold, the default font is Arial! Just what the doctor ordered! Thanks anyways for the advice. I wonder though what the root cause is for the Normal.dot file not being found or created whenever Word 2007 is started. Oh, well. |

NOrmal11 is your old Normal.dot, from a previous version of Word. When you upgrade, Word renames Normal.dot to Normal11, rather than delete it. I have heard that Adobe PDF Maker interferes with saving customizations to template. Anyway, glad to hear it is fixed.
