Above or below, you may insert and auto-numbered caption, which will keep track of the numbering as you go. Look on the References tab, Captions section.

Sorry for delay.
Place your cursor where the caption is to go. On the References ab, click on Insert caption, select the Label (perhaps Equation) from the list, and click OK. Add text as desired. Wherever you wish to insert a cross reference in the text, place your cursor, select Cross reference on in the same section on the References tab; select Equation (if that's what you selected for the caption); on the right, choose whether you just want the label and number or the whole caption text; then select the caption from the list below; click OK. |

Thank you Ulodesk!
It works, but unfortunatelly only if I place the equation to the right of the caption. If I place the equation on the left (which would be the conventional way to do it), I can't reference the equation without also displaying the entire equation. Is there a way that I can place the equation to the left and still be able to reference it? Regards, hpon |

Hi hpon,
You can use a Style separator to differentiate the caption and the equation for cross-referencing purposes. See Word's Help file for details. Alternatively, you could use a borderless two-column table, with the equation in one cell and the caption in the other.
