Using continuous section breaks for different headers/footers; blank page is inserted
I am formatting a book with different headers on odd/even pages, with roman numeral page numbering in the front matter, and arabic numbers starting on the first page of the main body of the book.
I have done this for years, using continuous section breaks; once in awhile, this happens: Word inserts a blank page (can't see it in print view, but can see the page numbers at bottom left in Word skip and page when scrolling). Example: All is well through page 9, when I click on the next page, Word says it is page 11 instead of 10. If I remove the page break and leave the continuous section break in on page 9, then there is no extra page; however, when I correct the page numbers inserted in the footer, then an extra page is suddenly there (at bottom left, not in print view). I have the default section in layout as Continuous for the entire document. PLEASE help. |

If you are POSITIVE that every section break is a Continuous section break then the only remaining reason for a page skip is Tracked Revisions.
Make sure all your tracked revisions are accepted OR make sure you can see all tracked revision deletions including invisible formatting like page/section breaks and paragraph marks. This is often easier to spot in Draft View.

Thank you. I will double check.

You would almost certainly want to be using an Odd-Page Section break, or at least a Next-Page section break between chapters if you want your chapters on a new page. If you are using Page Break before formatting in your chapter heading style, you would not need this, but then you really should be using the StyleRef Field instead of section breaks to change your headers/footers. |

Tracking changes is OFF.
I removed all section breaks. Put in ONE odd-section break on the page before the first page of body of the book. That works. When I attempt to add further section breaks - no matter what type -- the page numbering messes up again, with blank pages added. For reasons unknown to me, I cannot have page numbering in the front matter of the book; Word won't allow me to do that with correct page numbers and no blank pages. |
