Numbered list with auto restart numbering
Hello,
This is my first post in this forum. I have a very basic knowledge of Word. I want to create a style for numbered list and I was able to but problem is that its continuing the numbers. I want to restart the number when I apply the list later in the chapter. eg. This is what I want to achieve but I want a style to do it.===== 1.Video provides a powerful way to help you prove your point. 2. When you click Online Video, you can paste in the embed code for the video you want to add. You can also type a keyword to search online for the video that best fits your document. To make your document look professionally produced, Word provides header, footer, cover page, and text box designs that complement each other. To change the way a picture fits in your document, click it and a button for layout options appears next to it. When you work on a table, click where you want to add a row or a column, and then click the plus sign. 1. For example, you can add a matching cover page, header, and sidebar. 2. Click Insert and then choose the elements you want from the different galleries. 3. This is the last sentence ===== How do I achieve this? Thanks |

You can set up your numbering to restart under the next chapter, if that is a higher level of numbering. For example
Chapter 1 A. B. 1. 2. 3. C. 1. 2. Or you can just select the desired auto-number, right click it and find "restart numbering" if there isn't an intervening section number to trigger it. |

You want there to be a style numbering level above the one you are using to restart your numbering. This style need not have any numbering, itself.
Automatic Paragraph Numbering all starts with the Define New List Style Dialog. You use that to create and name a list style, within that dialog, when you format numbering you go to the Define New MultiLevel List Dialog. The key is to assign a separate existing paragraph style to each level of numbering. The styles can be built-in styles- or custom styles. If you use automatic paragraph numbering or bullets read Shauna Kelly's directions on numbering and bullets. Start with How to create numbered headings or outline numbering and her parallel page How to control bullets. For large documents you must follow these directions or you will lose your hair! (Mac version: Outline Numbering in Word for macOS - Best Practices - Brandwares). For styles attached this way, you also control the left indents through the Define New MultiLevel List dialog not the Ruler or the Modify Style dialog. You first want the paragraph styles existing in your document. You can, if you want, modify their formatting later. Then you go to the Define New List Style (Not Define New MultiLevel List! You will get to that dialog in the process, though.) This may seem a bit convoluted at first, but it really is not. Just follow the steps. Shauna Kelly's instructions use the built-in heading styles, but you can use any existing paragraph styles including your custom styles. There are, however advantages to using the built-in heading styles when you create a Table of Contents. Here are some more advantages: Why Use Word's Built-In Heading Styles? by Shauna Kelly Note, you can modify these built-in styles to look exactly the way you want. You want to do this even if what you want is a single-level list if you want the most control over your list. Videos on this https://youtu.be/niD6VXPvAyU?t=487 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EICWOeIhsR4 The basic idea is that the numbering is set using the Define MultiLevel List dialog with each numbering level being attached to an existing paragraph style. Once you have this set up, you should not use the buttons for numbering in the Ribbon but rather apply the appropriate style for that level. You can save a document with this as a template for future documents if you want so you will not need to do this every time. I checked the video and the sites provided by you.
For some reason it did not work for me. The list is going continuous. Its not restarting from 1 automatically. I have attached the docx file. The number 3 and 4 should automatically start from 1. How do I achieve that ? |

Here is a document where it is set up to restart numbering any time the Body Text style is used.
Each level in the list is attached to a distinct existing paragraph style. While the videos can be useful, study Shauna Kelly's page. Follow the steps there. All of your numbered paragraphs could be based on Body Text or Normal style. If you use the built-in heading styles, you could format them to have the same appearance as your other text or be bold, or whatever. You just need one that is at the top level and has no numbering. You only need the styles and levels that you will be using. |
