Angry Word 365 [quick] styles gallery less useful

My word displays large icons in the styles gallery, see attached image. In the other image, web inquiries show smaller icons which give you more icons displayed. I have tried deleting things from the ribbon to make more room but then it just expands the large icons and adds another large icon. I have worked with Microsoft help for over an hour and they were no use. I cannot find an option to switch to small icons but they seem to exist. Anyone got any ideas? Thanks

The first image you show is for the current version of Office. The second looks like Word 2007. There is no way to switch. That’s how the ribbon gallery looks now. MS changed it to work better with touchscreens.

Italophile is [understandably] mistaken.

The first image shows the view using the "Visual Refresh Preview/New Experience" modifications in Office.
See New Experience/Visual Refresh Preview - Microsoft Office - Microsoft 365 - Turning it On and Off.
Note that this also turns off display of your QAT by default.

It is certainly how some designers at Microsoft want it to appear.

The second image shows the [Quick] Styles Gallery as it has been in Word 2007-Word 2021 / 365 but for this "Visual Refresh Preview." Word 2007 and 2010 had the Change Styles button which has been moved to the Design tab's gallery of [Quick] Style Sets.
For a glance at the history of the Home tab in Ribbon versions, see Home Tab.
