Outlining/can't change folder
Hello!
I'm working on an editing project that involves needing to split a document into multiple subdocuments. The team recommended using Outline View. I followed the instructions but I'm running into a big issue-- When I go to "create subdocuments" (which takes each of my Level 1 headings and splits them up), it stores them in a folder I can't easily access. It also changes the names because I can't get into it to delete the other files. Is there a way to specify where I want the subdocuments created? Thank you! The general advice is to avoid the Master Document / subdocument structure altogether.
See Master Documents "Feature" in Microsoft Word. Why do you need to split it? See also: Outlining in Microsoft Word |

Perhaps you have a better solution? Ok, I'm working from a large master document that is divided into chapters. I have to edit each individual chapters, but it's easier to work with a copy of the master because it's a continuous story. So, do my editing marks, that's good. But it's a huge document, so I typically pull out 10 chapters at a time to edit, on a separate document. It makes it easier to make more mass-edits, like name changes, if I'm not repeatedly doing it every chapter. Anyway, when I submit these docs to Drive, I have to split them up again into individual chapters, 1 file per chapter. I can do this manually but there is a big push for meeting deadlines. It takes a moment to do it manually (copying into a fresh doc, naming, etc.) Thus, my group suggested the Outline feature. I'd just come back to this kind of project but this was a new suggestion. It sounded great from the concept, but it won't work for me, and I'm struggling to meet my required word count. Any suggestions? Thank you! Last edited by phoenixflame; 08-09-2023 at 12:56 PM. My understanding is that Wordperfect's master documents feature works fine.
Here are two free utilities that can perform actions like find and replace on a group of files in a folder. You should never do editing of subdocuments when in the Master Document format. Note, I have not tested the MD format in the last four years but have no reason to think it has been fixed. |
