I was editing a 13-page Word 2000 file that contains a mix of 17 PNG and JPG images, none of which have a border. While editing, I deleted a couple of the images and changed some of the words and then saved the file. I continued editing and in the process I accidentally pressed Ctrl+T. Each of my images was then replaced by a small 1-inch square box.

When I click one of the images and try to move it, the image becomes selected but does not move. Usually, but not always, I get a message saying there is not enough memory to display or print the picture.

So I quit Word 2000 without saving the file, restarted Word, and reopened the file. The small boxes remained. Then I restarted the computer and opened the file but the boxes still remained. I opened the file on a different computer and got the same results.

Then I opened the backup of the file and I was able to see my images.

What might be the problem? I can send a copy of the original and the backup file if needed.

I've been editing this file for the last 2 hours and the problem just happened again. I deleted the TOC and inserted a new TOC, then clicked on one of its entries, and that's when the problem occurred. I've been working with Word since version 1.0 came out in 1990 and have not seen this problem.

I have not inserted any new images nor resized any, just added a table and a lot of text. Once again, the backup file opens and displays all the images.

I tried to upload the file but I cannot because its size exceeds 500 KB (it's 1.1 MB in size).

Nothing in your description sounds like it should stress Word out. The file size and page count are certainly not excessive. I moved off Word 2000 a long time ago so can't test your file there anyway.

I would try saving the document in RTF format, closing, reopening the RTF and save back to doc format. That MAY help remove some corruption if that might be cause of your problems. If you have a more recent version of Word, you might try a similar process of saving to docx and then back to doc.

I've been working on another document that's similar to the one showing the problem and it opens and displays the images. Unfortunately, I opened both the problem doc and then its backup. They both now exhibit the problem and display the 'not enough memory to display or print..." immediately upon opening.

I don't have a later version of Word, so I tried your suggestion about saving as an RTF but the problem exists on that file as well. I can select the images and can apply different styles to them but I cannot change or edit them in any way.

I've uploaded a 146 KB excerpt from the problem file. Perhaps somebody else can see the problem?
