Default Selecting header doesn’t add to navigation

I’ve been going through a document selecting (highlighting) headings and then selecting header1 or header2 and the entry shows up in the navigation pane. But it doesn’t work for one of them. The ones before and after this one are ok. Any suggestions?

I typed a new line and heading2 worked and I deleted the problem line.

It sounds like you have already worked around the problem so this is for interest only.

I suspect you had applied the Heading linked character style instead of correctly applying the Heading paragraph style. This might happen if you selected PART of the paragraph before applying the Heading style AND you haven't disabled the Linked Styles option.

I strongly recommend you disable Linked Styles but in any case it is good practice to pay attention to what is selected when you apply a paragraph style.
  1. If your cursor is sitting in a paragraph (ie no selection, just the I beam cursor) then you apply a paragraph style to the entire paragraph.
  2. If your selection is an entire paragraph (including the paragraph mark itself) then you apply a paragraph style to the entire paragraph.
  3. If your selection includes part of one paragraph and extends into a second or more paragraphs then you apply the paragraph style to the entire selected paragraphs.
  4. However, if you have selected text within a single paragraph then applying a paragraph style CAN result in a linked character style being applied.
