Default Footnotes gone crazy

Hi Friends!
I have been working for a long time now on quite a long doc and no I noticed that after footnote 4 comes footnote 8!

I have tried many things to fix this I am seeing hidden text (there is none) and I cannot seem to solve the problem. If I add a footnote after 4 it marks it as five and then 8 becomes 9 so there appears to be 3 footnotes hiding somewhere.... what can I do?

Thank You so much
Susan

Default Well here is the issue that I still cannot solve

If I choose to show all markup I can see that there are some footnotes between the mentioned numbers that I deleted. So I chose to reject deletion and now they show up in the doc and if I delete them again Word still does not update the footnote counting. Is there some command "Re-number all footnotes"?

Deletion of content that is revision tracked means that deleted content is still 'in' the document. So that deleted content can effect the numbering of items such as footnotes.

If you rejected the deletions and then deleted them without revision tracking that second deletion then you really did remove them so the numbering can behave as expected. Of course you could have accepted all revisions to get the same result.

Whenever you have weirdness in a document, it can be useful to check to see if there are any tracked revisions and accepting them can often resolve the confusion.

Default Yes indeed

I played with the deleted footnotes in show all markup mode and was able to fix everything.
Thank You very much
