Need help with text boxes - need icon on QAT
I am using Word 2016, and have used it since about 2016. (And Windows 10 on a Dell desktop) I use text boxes a lot to make flyers and newsletters. But they don't seem to work the way they used to. I find it impossible to insert a text box on top of another text box, as in adding a caption to a photo, or correcting an image. I can't click inside the photo, but must draw a text box outside the photo, then drag it in. When I click on insert>draw text box>I get a random text box and another small one that can be moved, instead of an insertion point. It has become impossible to modify an existing document. New docs work a bit better, but still with a lot of fooling around, getting 2 boxes where I want one, deleting one then having it reappear, etc.
I don't know what to do or who could help. Is my old software just messed up? Or have changes been made? Word is the only app I use in the Office suite, but I'm guessing the Basic version currently available will not have the graphic capability I want. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I tried using Help, but found nothing of use. |

Text box problem
Thank you for the suggestion, but I've used Word for many years and have found it to be adequate -- until it got messed up. I am wondering if I should delete it and re-install it?

So far there have been no other replies. When I looked at the Microsoft Support page, I also saw an option to "repair". What do you think of that? I tried the same operations on my son's computer, and it worked perfectly. This problem started with an issue with the insert text box command on the quick start menu. I had to remove it because it no longer worked. That had always been my way to add a new text box.

This is an independent user-to-user support forum. It is a weekend. Give other volunteers time.
I do not recognize the term "Quick Start menu," but you may be talking about the Quick Access Toolbar (QAT). Have you tried the Insert a Caption feature on the References Tab? Textboxes can be saved for reuse and easy insertion in the Textboxes Gallery. This is saving as a Building Block. Running a repair may not help but won't hurt and does not take all that long. |

Text Box problem
Thank you for your thoughtful reply. You are right, I meant Quick Access, not Quick Start toolbar. That's how this all started. The text box option disappeared from that tool bar and attempts to restore it were not successful. The advice from this forum was to forget it and use the insert text box command instead, but that hasn't worked out well.
Regarding the other suggestions, I want the freedom to insert a textbox the size I want in the location I want. Sounds simple, have done it for years, but suddenly it isn't. I appreciate the link to repair, I was concerned that it only applied to Office 365, but upon reading more I see that it covers Office 2016 also. It's comforting to know that "it won't hurt" -- that was my concern. Thanks for all of your help to date. |

First, see my page Modifying the Quick Access Toolbar (QAT) in Microsoft Word.
You may want to save your modifications in a separate global template. It is not that hard. In the Modify he QAT dialog you can find the command to insert a Text Box under All Commands. The icon looks like a little frame. |

My current version of Word 365 works exactly the same way, except I don't get any second text box when using "Draw text box" when inside another text box.
In any event, it really doesn't seem to matter if you "draw text box" while inside another text box or if you simply insert a text box when not inside a text box. The behavior of the new text box is the same (assuming you are setting your "wrap text" preferences to "tight". It is an independent text box that can be dragged anywhere, including on top of another text box, then use layer options to send it to back or front. Why can't you modify an existing document with this setup? Quote:

Could the "extra text box" be a drawing canvas?
There is an option for the drawing canvas at File > Options > Advanced; you can clear that option.
