This is a legal formatting issue.

In normal mode (i.e. creating or editing a document), I cannot see the lines (bottom and vertical) that separate Plaintiff and Defendant from the rest of the text on the right side of the first page. HOWEVER, if I go to Print Preview, or Print the Document the lines show.

HOW do I get the lines to show during edit or creation so I can adjust their position?

Word 97 has a Print view that is the equivalent of the Print Layout view in later versions. It is as close to What You See Is What You Get (WYSIWG) as any editing page in Word.
Normal view is for quicker response to typing but does not show graphical elements. (In later versions this is called draft view.) With modern computers it is seldom more effective in updating display.

1) Normal
2) Outline Layout
3) Page Layout
4) Outline
5) Master Document


Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. Normal does NOT show graphics (which includes lines). However Outline Layout and Page Layout does show graphics and this allowed me to reposition the line.

Page Layout was later named Print Laoyout.

I do not recall whether Word 97 has shortcuts for some of the views on the right side of the Status Bar.

By the way, avoid Master Document.
Even in Word 2021, it is dangerous.
Master Documents "Feature" in Microsoft Word

They are on the left side.
The right side of the status bar has some other short cuts for various things.
If you need to know what they are please advise.
