Default Page breaks/Continuous not working

I am editing a 1550 work and am strictly following the original page numbering, with a bracketed boldface page number indicating a new section on the same Word page, with footnote numbering restarting for each new section. Like this:

...he turned his host another way
[1024] and went into Provence and laid siege to Marseille

Original page no. [1024] is essentially a section head. At the first square bracket I would command Page break/Continuous, and also at References, Restart footnote numbering with each new section for the whole document.

PROBLEM is that Word is automatically starting every new section on a new page--that is, it's not Continuous. As well, for References even though I command Apply changes to whole document, Word just doesn't pay any attention.

In editing earlier chapters, in separate docs, Continuous worked OK, but I just cannot see where to tell Word that Continuous means that, not Next [new] page.

What you may be talking about is section break - continuous.

Page break means a new page.
Section breaks cannot be part of a Word style.

I was using the command Layout/Breaks/SectionBreaks/Continuous. Sorry I mislabeled the post.

Still, what's going on that Word is inserting a page break at a section that is clearly marked for Continuous?

Perhaps, even without the section break, Word thinks it is time for a page break?

I want Word to do as I say. Right now my project--some 2,000pp in several files--is a draft and I don't care about what Word thinks is a good page length. I make a section head (like "[1204]" and I mark it for Continuous, and I command footnote numbering to Restart for each section. That's the way I want it. Word did it my way in previous files in the same format. So why is it ignoring the Continuous now?

In the Page Setup dialog box, try changing the "Section start" back to "Continuous."

Thanks but that's not working either. As I said, the project is in multiple Word docs and this is the first doc in which Continuous is not working. I will experiment with copy-paste of text from new (bad) doc to old (good) doc and see what happens.

So what happens when you try? Nothing? Or do you see an error message?

You can save a copy with the problem section break and with most text removed and attach it here if you want.

Hmm. I was setting up a partial "good doc" in which Contnuous was working fine, intending to copy-paste a swatch of "bad doc" in which Continuous was getting screwed up by insertion of actual New Page breaks. So I did a Save As to new "bad doc"--and when I looked at it, Continuous was working throughout the doc. In other words, Save As got Word to refresh all previous instructions, incl Continuous for section breaks.

So this solves the problem! I'd like to believe all such structural Word problems go away with Save As and eventual Renaming to the original filename...

Anyway, thanks for your help, and I hope this solution might be helpful for other Word users too.
