Default Combine Headings in Table of Contents on one line

I have a document with a table of Contents. Heading 1 consists of 2 lines of text (for example "Article I" and "Definitions"). When I include both within Heading 1, "Article I" appears on line 1 with its own page number, and "Definitions" appears on the next line with its own page number.

What I would like is for them to appear on the same line such as "Article I Definitions"...........p1

Any help?

See TOC Tips and Tricks by Suzanne Barnhill, MVP.

In particular, look at TOC Entries that do not appear in the document.
You want to be using Table Entry (TC) Fields as the basis for your TOC rather than headings.

Thanks Charles.

Im new to Word, and quite confused. If I sent you a sample document and a separate word file showing what I wanted, would you consider showing me?

Thanks again.

Attached is a template that demonstrates these principles.

The TOC is using TC fields to combine Headings 1 and 2 on one line and looks like this:

The generic TC Field looks like this:
Code:
{ TC “{ STYLEREF  "Heading 1" \n }: { StyleRef "Heading 2" }” \l 1 }
In the document, these headings are separate paragraphs. If you want to use the Building Blocks, be sure to download the template rather than just creating a new document. You do not need to use the building blocks to do this, they just may make it easier.

If your Chapter numbering is not automatic numbering, then the first StyleRef field should not have the \n switch. Useful StyleRef tricks by Suzanne Barnhill, MVP

You do not need to use Heading 2 for your secondary text but cannot use the same two styles. They can look the same, but the StyleRef fields will not work with two of the same style. Without using the StyleRef fields, you will need to separately write the TC Field for each chapter. With them, you can copy and paste the field or insert it from AutoText.

My initial reaction is to use a simple carriage return instead of a full line feed/carriage return, in the document.

ie, CTRL+ENTER instead of ENTER

If you are referring to a line break, the shortcut is Shift+Enter.

Ctrl+Enter inserts a manual page break in Word. Enter creates a new paragraph.
