Index markers are still visible after disable "paragraph mark"

Hello,

I have created a long index for my research paper, yet, the index markers (i.e., XE-field-codes) are still visible even when I disable the "paragraph mark ¶."

I am using MS Word 365 on Mac.

Help, please
