speed pains New fast system but Word seems so slow!
Last week I spent over $2000 to upgrade my system to the fastest machine that exists and I was feeling really really great because everything was working really fine but I see that again word is slowing down and displaying pages and everything and it is driving me actually berserk thinking that I wasted my money! Attached is a screenshot of my system settings.
Is this normal and is there anything I can do about it? Thank you very much! Susan |

Hi Susan,
When I look at your performance figures, I see Chrome and otzar. What do you mean by really slow? Can you give examples with real times? $2,000 will not buy the fastest computer out there. $15,000 might approach it for a desktop PC. You spent that $2,000 on upgrades?
Word problems?

>>When I look at your performance figures, I see Chrome and otzar.
Chrome I can close some open tabs but Otzar I need >>What do you mean by really slow? Can you give examples with real times? Hitting page up an and other navigation will be a little delayed. Drives me nuts... >>$2,000 will not buy the fastest computer out there. $15,000 might approach it for a desktop PC. You spent that $2,000 on upgrades? Well I maxed out my CC on this so this is the best I can do. Completely new system, Gave away my laptop. >>How much RAM? 32 gb >>SSD Drive? How large? SSD 1 tb >>Processor? Processor speed? Processor (12th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-12700K) >>Graphics Driver? NVIDIA RTX A2000 12gb >>Take a look at the second tab of the Task Manager as well. What should I be inspecting there? >>Word problems? None I know of >>Specific documents? No >>How big? Pages? File Size? 7 pages >>Graphic content? No but a lot of font formatting all via styles >>Tables? None >>Orientation changes or other things that require Section breaks? A few >>Direct formatting? Importance of Styles in Word Almost everything is styles >>New documents? >>How many documents open at once? Presently 5 THat looks like all of it Doc. WHere from here? Thank You S. |

This should be plenty of system for Word! It has mine beat!
I still do not care for Windows 11 but what can you do? I'm using 11 with Office 2021 writing this. Quote:

I see that the Task Manager has a new look in Windows 11 (why not!).
When I was talking about the second tab, in Win 11 it is the Performance tab, which shows up on the left side of the Task Manager. It lets you look at specific resources over time. I guess I would look at disk performance, memory, and the GPU. |

Word is an old program. MS keeps adding on bells and whistles to attract corporate buyers. They try to make the interface very easy for beginners, hiding the complexity. This is trying for experienced users because they keep moving the buttons.
The "New Experience" which should be what you are seeing is a case in point. New Experience - Microsoft Office - Office 365 - Turning it on and off So is the "Editor." I do not know of anything better. You could certainly try LibreOffice (free) or Word Perfect (not free but free trial available). Last edited by Charles Kenyon; 02-24-2023 at 12:02 PM. |

I'm curious as to why your system says "Microsoft Word (2)". Is that indicating that you have Word open twice? Or is that a Windows 11 thing?

I know Excel gets slowed down by lots of formatting, especially Conditional Formatting. Maybe word has similar issues with lots of formatting changes.
@RRB As an experiment, make a copy of your document and clear all the formatting. Does the performance change? Also, are there any add-ins running? especially looking at non-Microsoft add-ins? |

With just one document open, I have a subprocess for the document and another named "Artificial Intelligence(AI) Host for the Microsoft(R) Windows(R) Operating System and Platformx64." |

Well, I'll be... mine does the same thing. I never noticed, because it's not usually Word that sends me to the task manager; it's usually Excel and then because I usually have several workbooks open. I was having weird lags for a while, then realized that the coworker who just retired had kept all of her files in Excel 97-2002 format so my system was converting them upon opening.
